Trip To The Art Museum

Trip To The Art Museum

Posted under Living With Low Vision, Low Vision Info

New assistive technology can help the visually impaired read and write again, and even enjoy illustrious art with the aid of a CCTV (desktop magnifier). However, what if you wanted to actually go to an art museum? It wouldn’t be feasible to lug a large CCTV out of the house; Going to an art museum is “not a very independent experience,” says Kathy Nimmer, an English teacher who has been blind since third grade. After hearing about the American Art Museum’s specialized programming for blind visitors, she made a trip. “It was the first time that I felt connected with art in a similar way as my sighted colleagues.”.

This endearing story is a reminder that, today, many amazing experiences that just weren’t feasible 10 or 15 years ago, now exist custom-made for the visually impaired. We’re finding new, highly effective ways of doing things differently, accommodating those suffering from low vision, or no vision at all. American Art Museum’s accessibility program has been exceedingly successful, and other institutions are following suit. Find out how Kathy “saw” historic paintings, without her eyes, and discover a new world with endless possibilities.
