Unexpected circumstances forced Tammy Ruggles to make a major career change. Although she spent years studying to become an active social worker in her community, a progressive low vision disease (retinitis pigmentosa) made it hard for her to continue her job. Switching field, she became a photographer, and she went pro within a matter of months. Her talents in the field of visual arts are renown, and she’s quickly established a name for herself amongst her peers in the industry.
If photography relies heavily on one’s visual acuity, and Tammy is nearly blind, then how is she such a phenomenon in her field? Natural born talent? Or a burning desire to do what she loves, and not take “no” for an answer? It’s almost as if her visual impairment gives her an edge, rather than a hindrance. Tammy’s able to experience the world in such a way that, even with her limited vision, she’s able to capture timeless imagery to be enjoyed by future generations.
